Celluclay Snowmen

These adorable snowmen were made by fourth graders using a product called Celluclay. It is an air dry clay that is pretty neat, although it is expensive. The lesson took the first half of 3 art class. One half class to make, the next half class to paint and the last to add scarf and glitter gloss. The second half of these classes the kids worked on a Martin Luther King Jr. mural. Pictures to come later!

Clay Dragons and Paper Castles

I love making these clay dragons each year with third grade. This year after we made them I saw on Pinterest Deep Space Sparkle’s paper castles here: (http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/2012/01/fairy-tale-castles-art-project/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DeepSpaceSparkle+%28Deep+Space+Sparkle%29&utm_content=Google+Reader) and thought 3-D castles would look so neat displayed with the dragons in this same style.
The kids LOOOOOOOOOOOOVED making these. I had no idea what a hit it would be! Can we add a trap door? Can we add a princess looking out the window? Can we make the drawbridge open and close? Yes! Yes! Yes! Here the dragons are guarding (or about to destroy) the castles in the library.

Batik

In Art class, 4th & 5th graders learned that Batik is the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye. Some of the finest batiks are still being made today in Indonesia. Students made their own Batiks using fabric and a flour/water/alum mixture in place of the wax. The last step was to paint their batiks using neon colored paints.

This is also a hit every year with first grade. We make the painted snowmen (posted below) and then make 3-D snowmen. We talk about how the two artworks are the same/different. This really helps sink in the difference between 2D and 3D and shape and form.

In Art class, first graders read the book, Dream Snow by Eric Carle. Students created art like Carle by painting snow over their snowmen on a transparency like Carle did in his book. Students learned how Carle creates his art and also learned the difference between authors and illustrators.
I do this lesson every year and it always turns out so cute!

Alligators and Crocodiles

Do you know how to tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile? My third graders do! In Art class, the third graders have been learning the similarities and differences between alligators and crocodiles. They learned what it means to be cold-blooded, what a habitat is, and what the characteristics of a reptile are. Third graders worked on many art skills when creating their reptiles such as; drawing, cutting, gluing, weaving, stamping, and painting! Emphasis Sculptures

I needed a one day lesson for a 4/5 split. I had lots of colorful blocks laying around that I thought the kids would have fun hot glueing together to make sculptures.
Students created these sculptures focusing on emphasis. Emphasis is the focus, main idea, or what “grabs” your attention. Students agreed the marble was the emphasis point on their sculptures for many reasons such as; color, shape and size.

In art class, first graders have been learning the difference between geometric and free-from shapes.
Students created abstract art just like the artist Kandinsky by drawing geometric and free-form shapes on sandpaper with crayons. Then they watched as the sandpaper was ironed onto paper to create these beautiful prints!

The Very Busy Spider

After the 4th and 5th graders finsihed their day of the dead skull artworks, they created shrink-y-dink necklaces. They could trace a skull picture or create their own design. I shrink them right before their eyes in my toaster oven at school! The kids love it and they turned out very cool.

In Art class, 2nd graders learned about the Mexican celebration,
The Day of the Dead.
On this day, families visit the graves of loved ones they have lost. Candles, marigold flowers, food and drinks are placed on the graves. This is a happy time for families, not a sad one. Many skulls and skeletons are seen during this celebration to represent the spirits of loved ones.

Our city wanted to collaborate with the local schools to paint murals on the cities snow plow blades. One of my schools was chosen, so 5th graders volunteered to help paint during their recesses. We decided to go with a Packer theme, because I mean, come on, we are SO proud of our Green Bay Packers!!!!!

Monet Inspired Fall Trees

In Art class, 5th graders learned about the artist Claude Monet. Students looked at a power point about him and spent some time studying his paintings and learning about how he used dabs of color without smoothing the paint to fill areas in his paintings. This style of painting is called Impressionism. Students made art like Claude Monet by dabbing colors of paint in this autumn tree painting. They mixed their own secondary colors (orange, green and purple) using the primary colors (red, yellow and blue). For the finishing touch students created a symmetrical leaf print frame.

Pumpkin Landscapes

In Art class, 4th graders learned the different parts of a landscape; foreground, middleground, background and horizon line. Then they learned how to create depth in their artwork by drawing three different size pumpkins. Students then used the local artist Holly Hebel’s work as inspiration as they colored their pumpkin landscapes. Students worked really hard shading their pumpkins to show roundness.

In Art class, 2nd graders reviewed the lines horizontal, vertical and curved. They used a ruler to help draw the horizontal and vertical lines that you see. Next, 2rd graders traced their hand to get curved lines. Students also reviewed the warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and cool colors (blue, green, purple) while coloring their artworks.

My school, (actualy two of my three schools), has been chosen to paint the front of our city snow plow blades. Each blade is 3 feet by 9 feet. Any ideas for what to paint on them with my students? 5th graders made these pumpkin drawings on the first day of class after we got done with the back to school stuff. They drew with pencil, traced with white oil pastel and then colored with construction paper crayons. Main focus was on shading, highlight/shadow and making things look round. We looked at a local artist's work for inspiration, Holly Hebel.

In art class, we studied peacocks! 2nd graders learned they originally came from India and that they can even fly! They also learned that only the male has a huge beautiful tail of feathers. The female is mostly gray with short feathers. While learning about peacocks, we also learned about the warm and cool colors.

Ok, isn't this SO amazing for a 5th grader!?!?! This is Zach, he is taking a clay art class this summer at the local collage, which you can see is right up his ally! He had the idea of being able to take the wing in and out for the money hole! He worked So hard on this and even came in during a few recesses to finish.

I love this project! These clay banks were created by 5th graders. I was so amazed at their talent, there were so many good ones to post! They were made by connecting two pinch pots stuffed with a paper towel. The students could make any animal they wanted. We used tempera paint and Mod Podge because Glaze is so expensive and we are running very low! There is only one hole at the top, big enough for money to go in and come out!

Tiki Statues

Tiki statues have been around for hundreds of years. They have their roots in Polynesian culture. They are most prominently found in the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Hawaii and the most famous Tikis tower over Easter Island.

Fifth grade students learned about the mystery surrounding the massive head sculptures on Easter Island and discussed there possible meaning.

Tikis usually featured a human head carved from wood or volcanic rock. The large cylindrical shape of the trees formed their basic shape. All of the features are exaggerated especially the nose and mouth. Most ancient Tikis have little painted decoration. They differ from Totem poles because they lack the presence of animals and the intention of telling a story or representing a group of people.

Fifth graders created their Tikis by sketching out ideas onto brown paper with pencil. Students then traced their design to make their Tikis symmetrical.
Next, they used construction paper crayons to add vibrant color to their drawings. Lastly, they used lines to replicate the texture of a wood carving.

I was asked to create thumb print vases with each class for the raffle at the school's carnival. I'd never done this before, but I think they turned out pretty cute! My favorite one is the pigs. I may be a bit biased though, pigs are my favorite animal! My mom donated the vases and I picked up some glass paint at Michaels. I called each student up during work time, painted their thumb, and then pressed it onto the glass! The students that won the vases were very excited!

In Art class, 5th graders reviewed the primary colors; red, yellow and blue and the secondary colors; orange, green and purple. Students “took at walk” with their paint brushes as they created an abstract painting using the primary colors to create the secondary colors.

In Art class, 1st graders learned about two different types of shapes; geometric and free-from. Some examples of geometric shapes are circles, squares, and triangles. Some free-from shapes are cats, blobs, and me. Students created art just like the artist Kandinsky by painting geometric and free-form shapes. They painted shapes using the primary colors and then added black paint to show different types of lines.

Chihuly Macchias

In Art class, 4th graders learned about the sculptor
Dale Chihuly. He is from Washington and is still making art today! He makes huge glass sculptures of chandeliers and towers. We even have a Chihuly artwork here in Green Bay, at the Weidner Center!
Students created art like Chihuly by making mini Macchias out of coffee fitlers, markers and starch! Students had to use warm or cool colors while making their Macchias.

What’s a Maachia? Here is the story:

Chihuly woke up one morning and said, “I’m going to use all 300 colors of glass that are made, in as many combinations as I can.” He called this new series of artworks Macchia (MAH-key-ah) which is Italian for “spotted”.

For these pieces Chihuly mixed up all the colors in different ways, like a collage, to create all sorts of multicolored, spotted Macchia. With so many colors, some people thought his new creations were ugly at first, but Chihuly loved them and kept on making them. Today they are displayed in museums around the world!

This idea came from Art with Mr. E! The 5th graders studied Dale Chihuly and created a collaborative tower in his style. They each brought in a water bottle, wrapped it w/tissue paper and gluey water. They also each made a paper sculpture. My husband and father made the stand and we just stuck our art into the holes from the chicken wire! It turned out great! We get many complements from visitors as it is placed at the front entrance of school!

Anyone out there have a great "filler" lesson for 5th grade. We are doing printmaking (abstract ) and some kids are ready to print, some still have a lot more work to do before they can print. I want to give the students that are done something fun but relevant to work on. (not just free time) Something non-messy, like drawing. Maybe a neat abstract drawing that wont take a lot of my time to explain.....I'm stuck on any great ideas.....Would love some help!
