First graders made clay pinch pots and then made these clay charms. They stepped on a small ball of clay to create the texture! The kids LOVED doing this! They were done just in time for Mother's Day!
I love this lesson! I've been doing it the past few years and don't see it going away any time soon! I just love teaching the kids about Picasso (I took an entire semester class, all about Picasso at the University of Minnesota-awesome class!) So I have lots of neat stories about each painting that the kids love learning about. The kids mix their own secondary colors in this painting, so it’s a nice review of that too. The drawing of the hand part is tricky and I do hear a few “I can’t” or “this is too hard” comments, but for the most part, they do great!
The second graders loved making these! They took two art classes. (Art classes are 60 minutes). I wish I would have had them make the legs longer…. Today was decorating day. Before I knew it, they asked, "can we add a mustache? Glasses? A tongue?" Sigh....I have to remind myself to do Dali mustaches next year. They are definitely the cool thing right now!
