The Very Busy Spider

2nd graders were inspired by
Eric Carle’s book,
“The Very Busy Spider.”
Students learned how Eric Carle created his illustrations
in his books.
Like Carle, students painted large sheets of paper with bright colors and made designs in wet paint using their
paint brush handles!
2nd graders cut and glued their papers to create their own
very busy spiders!

  1. Hi Jenny,

I have just begin to create Carle style painted paper with mixed results. Did you have the kids paint one color on colored construction paper and then draw lines in the wet paint? Your photos are amazing and the paper looks like Mr. Carle himself made them!

  2. Hi Pat, Thanks for the complement!
I have the kids use white paper. For this project they mixed their own secondary colors. So I demo how to mix yellow + pink (i like to use pink b/c it makes such brighter secondary colors, we talk about how pink is a lot like red) they paint the paper yellow first w/a large brush and add water as needed. then they paint pink right over the top to make orange. next, they dip back into straight pink and paint wavy lines over the orange paper. last they turn their brush around and scratch a texture with the handle. hope this makes sense!

  3. I love these! Mounting them on black paper makes the colours pop!
