Home school art, Warm/Cool Suns

I am taking the school year off to be home with my 3 young kids. Our church has many families that home school and the opportunity was given to me to teach art to them! Once a week, we meet in the basement of church, I teach two groups of kids art while my own children are being taught catechism. It has been a lot of fun! Most of these students have never had an art class before and are so eager to be creative! Here is their first project. We learned about the art elements line and color. I am amazed by the talent!

  1. Jenny, I'd love to know more about how you got involved with this. I am now retired, but still like to work with kids. I started a business and teach an after school art enrichment class once a week, but I've struggled to find students. The competition with sports is a big challenge, plus this year it seems parents are more stressed about homework due to the Common Core, and don't want to give their kids any more to do. Sad, but true.

I've often thought that I'd like (through my business) to offer some sort of weekly art program for homeschoolers. I am sure there are many locally, but since my own child is an adult, and I don't live in the community where I taught, I have no connections to anyone who homeschools and I don't know how to find them.

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

  3. Hmm, that is a good question. My husband was home schooled along w/his 6 siblings, and I have 34 nieces and nephews (and counting) many of which are home schooled. So I know many families that do it b/c of my family connection and through church. I'd start with a church and ask around. It seems that many home school families know each other and sometimes work together or do field trips and things together. I bet if you find one or two families, you'll find lots! The kids and parents are so happy to have art! I am sure they would just love having you teach them! Good luck!
