Weaving

I have 5 fourth grade classes. With the end of the year approaching, I wanted to save on supplies like glue, paint and paper. So I decided to end the year with them doing a weaving. The only consumable supply is yarn, which I have a ton of! This project was such a hit! The students kept telling me how much they love weaving! I even had 4 students make their own weaving at home and bring it in to show us! The only problem with doing this at the end of the year is that they can’t be displayed in the hallway! This lesson took about 4-5 60 minute classes. It was such a great way to wind down the year. They stayed busy and focused the entire time! The only major requirement I had, was they had to choose warm, cool or neutral colors.

Mod Podge Collage Boxes

Another end of the year lesson to keeps 5th graders interested and working for the entire art class! This lesson takes 3-4 60 minute art classes. These boxes were donated to me from a local trophy making company. The boxes were used to ship trophies to the company and then they don’t need them any more. The inside of the boxes are lined with black velvet! They are beautiful! I have the kids spend time cutting out images they like from magazines. They can even bring in pictures from home or stickers. Then they Mod Podge the magazine pictures on their boxes! They truly love making these, some have even said, “this is the best project we have ever done!” Some decorate their boxes with animal pictures or flowers. And yes, that is a Twilight box and a Justin Beiber box you see as well! :)

Happy Hats!

These "Happy Hats" were created by 1st grade in one art class! We used a long strip of white paper to write our names on and color with decorations. Then we built our hats using sticky tape! The kids LOVE these and it is so fun to see how creative they can get!

3-D Lizards

This is another great end of the year lesson. We talk about shape/form and 3-D/2-D.

Symmetrical Masks

This is a great end of the year lesson. These are 2nd graders, but any grade would enjoy! It takes two 60 minute art classes to make. We start by learning the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical. The students have to show symmetrical balance on their masks using markers. They loved making these!

The Grouchy Lady Bug

1st graders learned about Eric Carle, and how he has accomplished paper collage through children's picture book illustrations. He has illustrated over 40 books within the past 30 years! Students read the story The Grouchy Lady Bug and then began their project by making a tissue paper collages. Next, they cut apart their paper to create their own lady bugs!

Eric Carle Bird Collages

Day one we watched a video on Eric Carle and painted paper using a variety of techniques like Carle. Day two and three we cut and glued our collages together!

Value Ice Cream Cones

3rd graders learned that value in art is the lightness or darkness of a color. Students also learned the terms tint and shade. Tint is when you lighten a color by adding white. Shade is when you darken a color by adding black.
3rd graders practiced painting a value scale from light to dark using the color of their choice. Next, they turned their paintings into ice cream scoops!

Degas Movement Figures

5th graders studied the artist Edgar Degas. They noticed the movement he shows in his artworks of ballerinas and horses. Students created their own Degas’s inspired movement artworks. They started out making their own scratch paper using oil pastels. Next, they formed a figure doing some kind of action out of tin foil.
