5th grade snowmen art!

Fifth graders created the same subject matter in 2-D and 3-D, snowmen!

M.C. Escher Tessellations

5th graders learned about the life and art of M.C. Escher through power point. We looked at his tessellations and created our own! The animal shape that you see was a stencil that they had to trace 5 times trying to get it to match up perfectly, not as easy as it looks! You can also see the assessment that the student filled out to be glued to the back of their art. This also dubs as a way to communicate what is being taught in the art room with families!

Papier Mache Animals

5th graders created these papier mache animals using recycled materials! You can see from the bottom picture here, they used creamer shaped bottles, news paper, tag board and tape to create their armature for their animal. The next art class they had to distress one color of construction paper and papier mached over their armature. The class after they drew on details (eyes, mouth, legs) with pencil and went in and painted it these details. The class after they decorated with yarn, pipe cleaners, gems, ribbon, what ever they needed! I love when students say, "I wan't to do this"...."How can we do that?" and we brainstorm how to can do it! That is what art is all about, problem solving! I just adore these three unicorns and how they each went about decorating it differently!

Calder Wire Fish

Fifth grade artists studied famous American Sculptor Alexander Calder (1898-1976). We found he worked in mixed media but his favorite media was metal and wire. During his lifetime, Calder created many circus figures in action and animals because he loved the circus growing up and showed this though his playful wire sculptures. His mobiles and stabiles are now seen worldwide! All fifth grade artists created their own wire fish sculpture based on Calder’s piece titled “Finny Fish”. They looked great hanging in the hallway! I wish I would have snapped a picture!

Snowmen at Night

I've done this lesson the past two years and the results are always wonderful! We read Snowmen at Night and discuss the illustrations, particularly looking at how the illustrator shows form using highlight and shadow. The kids get so into these drawings and adding details! Many staff members comment on how great they look hanging up in the hallway!

Degas Figures

In Art class, fifth graders studied the artist Edgar Degas through power point. They noticed the movement he showed in his artworks of ballerinas. Students created their own Degas inspired artworks. They started out making their own scratch paper using oil pastels and black paint. Next, they formed a figure doing some kind of action out of tin foil.

Mardi Gras Masks

In Art class, 5th graders learned about the celebration of Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras, which is a carnival, is celebrated all over the world. It is most popular in New Orleans.
Mardi Gras is French for fat Tuesday (mardi = Tuesday and gras = fat). People wear costumes and masks on Mardi Gras. There is also dancing, music and parades in the streets.
5th graders each created their own Mardi Gras mask using a plastic mold of a face. They started by paper maching it with colorful tissue paper. Next, they had fun adding decorations like feathers, gem stones, pipe
cleaners and sequins!
