Value Pumpkins

In Art class, 4th and 5th graders have been learning about the element of art called value. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Students created value by adding white and black to orange paint while painting their pumpkins. Students learned that adding white to a color is called a tint and adding black to a color is called a shade. This was also great lesson for practicing neat painting skills!

Line Owls

In Art class, third graders have been studying different types of lines. Students created a step by step drawing of an owl, drawing one line at a time. Third graders really focused on neat tracing, painting, cutting and gluing for this project. Way to go third graders! Your owls are a hoot!

Fall Leaf Collage

In Art class, 2nd graders created fall leaf collages. A collage is an artwork made by cutting and gluing pieces together. To make the leaves in their collage, students practiced three different painting techniques: painting with a brush, sponge painting, and stamping. Beautiful work 2nd graders!

Shape Scarecrows

In Art class, first graders studied shapes and learned the difference between geometric and free-form shapes. Geometric shapes are math shapes, such as circles, triangles, rectangles or squares. Free-form shapes are shapes that are uneven and not regular, like the shape of a leaf or cloud. Students each created a scarecrow using geometric and free-form shapes. This project was also great for first graders to work on their cutting, gluing, and tracing skills! Way to go first grade artists!

Forget Waldo, Where is Mrs. Van Pay?

In Art class, all Tank students in grades 1st – 5th created self-portraits for this large collaborative artwork! Mrs. Van Pay is our principal!

Square 1 Art

Another school year has started! One of my schools does a big Square 1 Art fundraiser. These are what the students created! First grade; warm/cool color hands. Second grade; tissue collage lady bugs. Third grade; warm/cool color heart paintings. Fourth grade; foam paper prints.

Last Post of the 2012-13 School Year! Collaborative Painting!

For our last project of the year the kids worked on collaborative paintings. We talked a lot about working together and that everyone’s idea/opinion matters and needs to be respected. Each table had to pick a shape and paint that shape over and over again on a large paper w/black paint. The next step was to add lines to connect the shapes. The next class came in and added color. Each class kept adding more and more until it looked complete. You’ll have to wait until next school year to see the results because we will be hanging them up right at the start of the school year!
